For decades, one story has served as the crown jewel of the "ancient astronaut" hypothesis: the astronomical prowess of the Dogon people. Located in the central plateau region of Mali, the Dogon possess a rich, complex, and beautiful cosmology. But according to a highly publicized narrative, they also possessed something impossible: highly specific, mathematically accurate knowledge of the Sirius star system—centuries before modern Western telescopes could detect it.
Specifically, the claim is that the Dogon knew the brightest star in our night sky, Sirius (Sirius A), had an invisible "dark star" companion. They called it Po Tolo (Sirius B), accurately describing it as incredibly small, unimaginably heavy, made of a mysterious metal, and operating on a 50-year elliptical orbit.
Where did an agrarian society get the data for a white dwarf star? According to the lore, the Dogon attributed their knowledge to the Nommo—a race of amphibious, highly advanced beings who descended from the sky in a spinning, wind-generating ark.
It is an extraordinary claim. It’s also a perfect opportunity to take a look at how we investigate the fringes of human belief, separating the genuine wonders of human culture from the forcing of patterns.
The Origins of the Claim: From Mali to the Mainstream
To understand how this idea took flight, we have to look at the primary sources. The story originates not from ancient stone tablets, but from the fieldwork of two French anthropologists, Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen. Beginning in the 1930s, Griaule conducted extensive, decades-long interviews with Dogon elders, most notably a blind hunter named Ogotemmêli.
In 1950, Griaule and Dieterlen published a paper titled "Un système soudanais de Sirius" (A Sudanese Sirius System), which laid out the Dogon's supposedly ancient knowledge of Sirius B.
For 26 years, this remained an obscure ethnographic footnote. That changed in 1976 when author Robert Temple published The Sirius Mystery. Temple took Griaule’s findings and ran with them, arguing that the precision of the Dogon's astronomical knowledge was smoking-gun evidence of extraterrestrial contact. After all, he reasoned, you can’t simply guess the orbital period and mass of an invisible star. The book was a massive success and permanently cemented the Dogon into the lore of UFO and ancient astronaut research.
A Methodological Breakdown: Seeking the Simplest Truth
When we are presented with a claim that requires us to rewrite the laws of human history (and introduce amphibious space travelers), it’s wise to ask instead: what’s is the simplest explanation that fits all the facts?
To find out, we must look at the hidden assumptions in the timeline.
Astrophysicist Carl Sagan addressed the "Sirius Mystery" in his 1979 book, Broca’s Brain. Sagan pointed out a logistical hurdle that is incredibly difficult to ignore: Sirius B was discovered by Western astronomers in 1862, and its astonishing density as a white dwarf was publicized in the 1920s.
Marcel Griaule didn't begin his interviews with the Dogon until 1931.
In the decades prior to Griaule's arrival, the region had been visited by countless European explorers, French colonial administrators, military personnel, and missionaries. Sagan proposed a concept known as "cultural contamination." Which scenario requires fewer leaps of faith: that aquatic extraterrestrials traveled 8.6 lightyears to teach a single Earth tribe about a white dwarf, or that a European visitor shared some fascinating, widely reported astronomical trivia while chatting around a campfire in the 1920s?
But we don't have to rely purely on deductive reasoning; If the Dogon possessed ancient, culturally embedded knowledge of Sirius B, another anthropologist should be able to go to Mali and document it. Turns out, one did.
In 1991, anthropologist Walter E.A. van Beek published "Dogon Restudied," the result of over a decade of his own fieldwork in the exact same region, speaking with the successors of Griaule’s original informants.
Van Beek actively searched for the Sirius B mythos. He couldn't find it.
The broader Dogon society had no concept of an invisible, super-dense companion star with a 50-year orbit. The "ancient" knowledge seemed to exist solely within the highly mediated, deeply specific interviews conducted by Griaule decades earlier. When van Beek finally found individuals who recognized the specific astronomical terms Griaule had written about, they freely admitted something devastating to the ancient astronaut theory: they had learned about the dark star from Marcel Griaule.
Van Beek concluded that the "Sirius Mystery" was likely the result of an unintended feedback loop. Griaule, armed with a deep interest in astronomy (which he studied in the 1920s, when the exciting scientific breakthrough being discussed in European academic and popular science circles was confirmation that Sirius B was a white dwarf), perhaps asked leading questions. His informants, operating within a culture that values politeness and creative storytelling, wove those concepts into their local mythology (like the scaly Nommo) to satisfy (perhaps out of respect) the enthusiastic researcher.

The Legacy of the Dark Star
Despite the overwhelming evidence pointing toward earthly cross-cultural contamination, The Sirius Mystery profoundly influenced the modern ancient astronaut genre. It provided something that blurry photographs and anecdotal UFO sightings couldn't: what looked like hard, verifiable, mathematical data.
To this day, the Dogon legend is utilized as a foundational text in fringe research. It established a modern template for the genre: find an anomaly in oral tradition or ancient art, isolate it from its broader cultural context, and apply a high-tech, modern interpretation to it.
Of course, we must admit that we do not know exactly what was said between Marcel Griaule and Ogotemmêli in the 1930s. We don't have audio recordings of their earliest conversations. But admitting ignorance on the exact genesis of a conversation doesn’t cede victory for the extraterrestrial hypothesis, not when we have a body of independently verified evidence to the contrary.
What we do know is that the Dogon are a remarkably inventive, philosophically complex people. They do not require the intervention of ancient astronauts to be fascinating. The complexities of memory, the pitfalls of anthropological fieldwork, and our shared, very human desire to connect with the universe is much more compelling than the fiction.
