On August 30, 2023, at the bottom of the Gulf of Alaska—about 200 miles off the coast of Sitka, at a depth of roughly 3,300 meters (that's two miles straight down, where sunlight is a rumor and the pressure would turn your average submarine into a crumpled soda can)—a remotely operated vehicle named Deep Discoverer spotted something that made a room full of seasoned ocean scientists collectively lose their minds.

It was smooth. It was gold. It was dome-shaped. And it was about the size of a softball, roughly 10 centimeters (4 inches) across.

A videographer on the expedition, part of NOAA's Seascape Alaska 5 mission aboard the Okeanos Explorer, took one look at the feed and dubbed it a "yellow hat." The scientists, meanwhile, were slightly less casual.

"I don't know what to make of that," one admitted.

"Yeah, I don't know what to think about this," another agreed.

"My first guess would have been sponge, but…" a third offered, trailing off in the universal scientific shorthand for this doesn't fit anything I know.

I'd love to poke it and see how hard it is." But another voice cut in with the kind of wisdom that only comes from watching too many horror films: "I just hope when we poke it something doesn't decide to come out. It's like the beginning of a horror movie." And then, the kicker: "I'm pretty sure this is how the first episode of the X-files started."

All of this was captured in the official dive video, the transcript of which NOAA published in its April 22, 2026 announcement of the orb's identification.

When the people who literally study the deep sea for a living start referencing The X-Files, you know you've got something special.

The Internet Does What the Internet Does

The object—soon christened the "golden orb" and the "golden egg" by an overeager media—was collected via suction sampler and sent to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, where it was accessioned as USNM_IZ_1699903. That sounds very official and scientific, which it was. But in the meantime, the internet had already done its thing.

Reddit, being Reddit, spun up theories faster than a conspiracy theorist at a UFO convention. Was it an alien egg? A "facehugger" waiting to hatch? A mermaid's egg? Remnants of a sea monster? A ratfish egg case? The golden orb, as NOAA later noted, "captured public imagination, inspiring a host of news articles"—and, one assumes, a host of extremely confident forum posts from people who had never seen the object but were certain it was somehow supernatural.

Because here's the thing about mysteries: humans hate them. "I don't know" has an insanely small half-life: It decays almost instantly into "therefore, aliens" or "therefore, government cover-up." The gap between "we don't know yet" and "we know" is where speculation breeds, and the internet is basically a speculation factory running 24/7 on renewable outrage.

The Investigation: Science, Actually Doing Science

While internet speculation was busy labelling the orb as everything from a dragon egg to a discarded prop from Prometheus, a team of actual scientists got to work. Led by Dr. Allen Collins of NOAA Fisheries' National Systematics Laboratory, the team included Steven R. Auscavitch (first author), Abigail Reft, Adena B. Collens, Christopher Mah, Merlin Best, Charlotte Benedict, Estefanía Rodríguez, and Marymegan Daly. Their methods were not "watch YouTube videos and type in all caps." They used morphological analysis, microscopic identification of spirocysts (adhesive stinging cells, which are exactly as unpleasant as they sound), and DNA analysis.

The DNA work was tricky. Initial barcoding was inconclusive due to contamination—because when you're dealing with something that's been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for who knows how long, getting a clean genetic sample is like trying to get a toddler to sit still. But whole-genome sequencing confirmed it was animal DNA, and mitochondrial genome sequencing eventually matched it to Relicanthus daphneae.

For good measure, the team also examined a similar specimen collected in 2021 by the Schmidt Ocean Institute's R/V Falkor, because scientists love nothing more than cross-referencing their weird findings with other weird findings and maybe, eventually, adding something new to knowledge.

The paper—titled "The Curious Case of the Golden Orb – Relict of Relicanthus daphneae (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Hexacorallia), a deep-sea anemone"—was published on bioRxiv on April 21, 2026 (DOI: 10.64898/2026.04.17.719276). It's a preprint, submitted for peer review, because even when you solve a mystery, science insists on having other scientists check your work.

The Reveal: It's… an Anemone. A Really Big, Really Deep Anemone.

On April 22, 2026, NOAA announced the answer. The golden orb wasn't an alien egg. It wasn't a facehugger. It wasn't a mermaid's lost jewelry box.

It was the remnant of dead cells at the base of a giant deep-sea anemone, Relicanthus daphneae.

Specifically, the golden base is normally hidden under the anemone, anchoring it to rock on the seafloor. Think of it as the anemone's foundation—its basement, if you will. The fact that it was detached and floating around suggests either incomplete asexual reproduction or that the anemone moved or died, leaving its base behind like a hermit crab abandoning a shell.

Dr. Collins, the lead researcher, had a delightfully human reaction to the discovery. "I was sort of like, 'Oh, man, now no one's going to care,' because it's not as interesting as a mystery. Now, it's an anemone." And then, the most relatable scientific admission of all time: "It was right in front of us, kind of like the whole time. Never even noticed."

To be fair to Dr. Collins and his team, Relicanthus daphneae is not exactly a household name. This thing is enormous—its body can reach up to 1 meter across, with tentacles extending up to 2 meters long. It's pale purple, pink, or whitish, lives between 1,200 and 4,000 meters deep on hard substrates and possesses the largest spirocysts of any known deep-sea species. It's basically the deep ocean's version of a haunted house: massive, pale, covered in stinging cells, and hiding in the dark where you can't see it.

So yes, the golden orb was "right in front of us" in the sense that it came from a creature scientists had already documented. But in its detached, dome-shaped, mysteriously golden form, it was utterly unrecognizable. The basement doesn't look like the house.

Why "I Don't Know" Doesn't Mean "Therefore, Aliens"

Here's the beautiful thing about this story: it didn't need aliens to be fascinating.

For 2.5 years, a team of professional scientists looked at this object, ran tests, cross-referenced specimens, sequenced DNA, and admitted—publicly, repeatedly—that they didn't know what it was. They didn't default to the most exciting explanation. They didn't hold a press conference announcing contact with deep-sea extraterrestrials. They said, "I don't know," and then they did the work to find out.

That's the part that gets lost in the translation from science to internet discourse. "I don't know" is not a stopping point. It's a starting point. The gap between mystery and answer is where science lives. And more often than not, the answer turns out to be something we already knew about—just seen from a weird angle, in a weird context, detached from the creature it came from and glowing gold at the bottom of the ocean.

Dr. Collins' worry that "no one's going to care" now that it's "just an anemone" is understandable, but misplaced. The story of how a mystery became an anemone is, in many ways, more interesting than the mystery itself. It shows the process. It shows the patience, the cross-referencing, the DNA sequencing, the willingness to say, "we were wrong about the sponge guess." It shows science working exactly as it's supposed to.

And let's be honest: a giant deep-sea anemone with 2-meter tentacles and the largest stinging cells in the ocean is still pretty cool. If that's "mundane," I'll take mundane over alien egg any day. At least anemones are real.

The next time someone points to a blurry photo or an unexplained object and says, "Science can't explain this," remember the golden orb. Science didn't explain it immediately. Science took 2.5 years, a team of researchers, multiple sequencing techniques, and a lot of "I don't know" before it got to "Oh, it's an anemone."

But it got there. And it didn't need any conspiracy to do it.
