Conspiracy theories are rarely victimless. While the internet debates the origins of SARS-CoV-2, real-world consequences are quietly dismantling the infrastructure that protects us from the next pandemic. The current campaign against virologist Ralph Baric serves as a stark case study in what happens when evidence is sidelined for political expediency.
In May 2026, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) suspended Baric—a tenured professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC) and one of the world’s most cited coronavirus researchers—from receiving federal funding. Furthermore, HHS initiated formal debarment proceedings that could sever his funding for three years or more. Following death threats, heightened lab security, and administrative leave, the 72-year-old scientist announced his retirement.
The official rationale for this career-ending move involves allegations of "deception" regarding a 2017 Wellcome Trust grant (which UNC acknowledges was an administrative oversight) and mouse experiments published in 2015. However, the subtext appears heavily influenced by the current political climate. Dr. Gigi Kwik Gronvall, an immunologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, noted: “HHS is punishing a world-class scientist who was working to protect people against pandemics... It sounds to me like this is political.”
A review of the evidence—or lack thereof—is revealing.
The primary target of HHS's scrutiny is a 2014 experiment, published in Nature Medicine in November 2015. Baric’s team took the spike protein from a bat coronavirus (SHC014) and inserted it into a mouse-adapted SARS virus backbone to determine if the bat virus posed a threat to humans. The result was that the chimeric virus was actually less pathogenic in mice than the original SARS virus; the infected mice lost weight but exhibited far less severe disease.
Furin is a naturally occurring enzyme—basically a pair of molecular scissors—that exists all over the inside of the human body, especially in our respiratory tracts. When a virus has a furin cleavage site, it means the virus has evolved a specific tear-line that perfectly fits the human body's own "scissors." When the virus enters your airway, your own furin enzymes snip the lock. The grappling hook springs open, allowing the virus to easily fuse with and infect your cells.
It's what allowed SARS-CoV-2 to spread so easily from person to person compared to the original 2003 SARS virus (which did not have a furin cleavage site).
Why is it such a big deal in the COVID-19 debate?

- The origin controversy. Because SARS-CoV-2 has this site, and its closest known bat virus cousins don't, lab-leak proponents point to it as a "smoking gun" for genetic engineering—especially since the 2018 DEFUSE proposal explicitly talked about artificially inserting furin cleavage sites into bat viruses.
The natural explanation: While it sounds suspiciously convenient, virologists point out that furin cleavage sites are incredibly common in nature. MERS has one. Several coronaviruses that cause the common cold have them. Feline and bovine coronaviruses have them. Viruses constantly swap genetic material in the wild (a process called recombination), and picking up a furin cleavage site is a very standard evolutionary trick that viruses use to jump to new hosts.
So, while the DEFUSE proposal makes it a tantalizing piece of circumstantial evidence for a lab leak, biology gives us a very ordinary explanation: viruses evolve these "tear-lines" naturally all the time.
There is, however, one document that lab-leak proponents frequently cite: the 2018 DEFUSE proposal. Submitted to DARPA by the EcoHealth Alliance, with Baric and the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) listed as partners, the proposal suggested adding "appropriate human-specific cleavage sites" (such as furin cleavage sites) to bat coronaviruses to test their infectiousness.
It is a notable document, given that SARS-CoV-2 possesses a furin cleavage site. However, Ockham’s Razor (or the KISS principle) requires us to evaluate the provable facts: DARPA rejected the proposal over safety concerns, and the research was not funded. An unfunded, rejected grant proposal from 2018 does not constitute proof of a 2019 lab leak, nor does it establish that Baric engineered the pandemic. Expecting ordinary explanations first—such as natural viral evolution, which frequently produces furin cleavage sites in coronaviruses—remains the most scientifically sound approach.
Yet, in the absence of direct evidence, extraordinary claims continue to flourish. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now U.S. Health Secretary, attempted to link Baric to the pandemic's origins in a 2023 book. Former CDC Director Robert Redfield suggested in 2024 that there is a "real possibility that the virus’ birthplace was Chapel Hill."
These unproven allegations carry an unacknowledged cost. Baric's lab played a pivotal role in bringing COVID-19 drugs and vaccines to market. As Columbia University virologist Ian Lipkin warns, canceling his support will "decrease our ability to respond to emerging threats."
We can and should have rigorous debates about laboratory safety, dual-use research, and the origins of COVID-19. Baric himself has called for investigations into whether the virus leaked from a lab in Wuhan. But when skepticism mutates into persecution without direct evidence, we risk blinding ourselves to the next public health threat, simply because assigning blame is easier than the hard work of science.
